Happy SLP day to all of our SLPs out there!
For our team, being an SLP means supporting home languages, communication with the community, and building communication across contexts.
It means we show up every day ready to give empathy, support, and love to each and every child that walks through our door
and it means recognizing all forms of communication!

USE IT OR LOSE IT!
Have you ever been so excited to get new materials and then they ended up collecting dust in the materials closet??
Our #spanish #apraxia cards have such rich, varied vocabulary that it’s easy to expand them across clients and for different goals. I love this activity for elementary students who are working on phonological awareness, describing emotions, inferencing, and narratives! Not too mention a great way to practice multi-syllabic words in isolation before immediately moving to a functional, generalizable activity!!!

Can I tell you a secret?
Treatment evolves constantly – and it should be if your individualizing intervention to the child! Especially with my young children, I may have a general idea of what targets I’d like to work on, but the prompts/drill vs play/context/targets are flexible depending on the needs of the child that session. And while I may have periods that closely follow a particular approach, I’m open to shifting as the child’s needs change!
I build on what is present in their inventory, and push slightly outside of that, but I’m not afraid to try out a harder/longer word if I know it is something motivating and meaningful to the child.
What are some considerations you have when working with a child with CAS?

Wanted to shout out Texas Autism Society. I had the privilege of sitting in on a Spanish caregiver support group. This is a standing weekly time for Spanish-speaking caregivers to virtually connect with each other, ask questions, share resources, and vent.
Many families of children with developmental differences report feeling isolated and overwhelmed. This is an informal meet-up time (drop in, no set agenda) and the moderators are amazing guides that allow space for discussion as well as providing advice. The one I sat in, families were checking on their phones, zooming in from the kitchen and the living room. Loved this way to share and connect in Spanish. and it's FREE.
Check the link in our bio to see a calendar of events for both this group and the many different parent and peer groups available!

WE USE NOUNS LESS THAN YOU THINK
This varies across languages but only about 20-37% of spoken speech consists of nouns!
Include high frequency and other word types that make it easy to get the point across.
The words featured in this video can be used to request, describe, and clarify and are also super buildable!

So excited to announce Pilar and I will be attending and presenting for the first time at the National Apraxia Kids Conference!
It is estimated that 1/3 of US children under the age of 9 speak a language other than English at home, of which 75% speak Spanish. So, the question is not what to do IF practitioners work with dual language learners, but WHEN?
This session will discuss research on bilingual intervention and how it may be applied to children with apraxia. Spanish intervention will be highlighted, demonstrating assessment measures, target selection, available resources, and session examples. Suggestions for application to other languages and tips for monolingual therapists will be covered.
I'll be presenting in-person on July 7th at 3 pm and my session will be available virtually on the website during that month. It will also count toward DEI continuing education for ASHA.
We will have a booth and squeezing in as many sessions as we can! Will you be attending?

Haha, I don’t like having a lot of toys out…unless I can use them in a routine. When we have a simple play routine, lots of toys make it easy to get a high frequency of repetitions for our targets. This particular one was working on “in front” and “behind” – look how many times we got to practice identifying or using that concepts (one for each animal)!

✨Quick Fixes for you Session Planning Doldrums✨
1. Rotate your toys
I have to rotate my toys out. If I have access to everything then I tend to create habits and use specific toys for certain activities and then when I get bored I think, oh I must need to buy something new. Nope! I’ve challenged myself to not buy any new toys for the last 8 months – I keep things sorted and every few weeks I put two bags of materials into my trunk. Just like with kids, when I only have access to a few toys then it encourages my thinking to go deeper, be more creative, and be flexible.
2. Plan one main activity
Make something fun and exciting to you (and hopefully your clients) each week. That keeps it fresh but isn’t overwhelming. Then you can individually extend and deepen that activity for whatever your child’s goals are.
3. A free day!
We all get in a rut. I hope that my sessions are child-led and centered, but sometimes an adult’s version of fun/freedom are different than a child’s. So ask your client – next week, what would you like to do? I’ve never not been able to work in my goals with their interest. Their buy-in is revamped and we all leave feeling refreshed.
What are your fixes when you’re feeling a little burned out?

✨A minimal pairs activity for cluster reduction✨
Speech sessions are pretty simple and straightforward. If we have toys, they tend to be basic but I try to make sure the object and the targets tie together and are meaningful.

I’m probably late to the party so I don’t know when @tobii_dynavox @tobiidynavox.espanol changed their Spanish options but…
I’m so in love with how dynamic the selection is and how it automatically changes the verb conjugation to match the previous word. Other systems I have used in the past were so hard – and when you have so many verb conjugations in Spanish (vs English) it sure made AAC use less fluid.

✨Don’t Fall into these Traps ✨
1. If a child is more dominant in one language doesn’t automatically mean they should only receive therapy in that one language! Look at the child as a whole and their communication needs across contexts. Don’t determine language of intervention based on therapist availability but based on child’s needs.
2. Bilingualism is a dynamic skill – often when children are acquiring a second language (particularly a majority language like English), their home language use may decrease or even regress. However, that isn’t a permanent phase and some children may dip and then advance. Again, the point here is to provide support based on child’s communicative needs.
3. This is true for all treatment, but we need to teach underlying patterns, what is the pattern for grammar, sound systems, language structures. Teaching the patterns and comparing the patterns across languages helps the child become a more efficient learner.

✨Not sure what a speech session might look like with a young child with CAS? ✨
A sample session:
🗃️Materials: some blocks, two animals
🎯Targets: 2-3 CVCV words with consonant changes (baja, vaca, mono).
1️⃣ Drill (10 minutes):
Start with 2 CVCV targets (changing consonants and same vowels: baja, vaca).
Focus on keeping the vowels consistent and transitioning between the syllables. Drill until the child is able to produce without maximal prompting. When they only need visual cues or small prompts to initiate, then I feel comfortable changing it up.
🔖Reinforce as needed. If a child needs token reinforcement, then all the little items for our play activity might go on a box on the table – one at a time as we complete our drill. I like to put them out of reach during drill because I don’t want distractions until the child is more consistent with our targets
2️⃣ Play (semi-structured) (5-10 minutes): Provide a simple play activity that has a repetitive routine to work on targets. Have the vaca/cow come from across the table, calling it, using varied intonation/emotion as it comes closer and closer.
🌟Gradually increase the complexity of the play. First, we called the cow over (only one target word). Then we put the cow at the top of our stairs and added in the more complex 2-word target (baja vaca/come down cow). Same idea here, change the intonation, we called him playfully, then more frustrated, then angrily (sometimes cow don’t listen!).
3️⃣ Extend (5-10 minutes): After the child understood the routine, we switched out between mono and vaca as these are two words that have structures we are working on (CVCV with consonant changes). This helps child practice the transitions and gives a little challenge. The routine stayed the same, but maybe the cow and monkey started getting wilder and jumping on my shelves and bookcase for us to tell them get down (baja vaca, baja mono).

✨Wishing you had time to prep? Save these 4 Hacks for simplified speech therapy
1️⃣ Sometimes less is more. Particularly with young children, the fewer the targets the more opportunities will have to provide models and feedback.
2️⃣ Kids will usually show you the words they want to know - Pay attention to the initiations they’re making and figure out what would be a good way for them to express it
3️⃣ Make sure that the targets are generalizable and can be extended into longer language forms. An object name isn’t necessary for a sentence, but a verb is
4️⃣ Instead of buying lots of really specific materials, keep things simple with open-ended toys like blocks, balls, cups, etc so that you’re not constantly reinventing the wheel

Just spent a day at the capitol talking with house representatives and senators about bills relating to people with disabilities.
Did you know that more than 7000 bills have been presented for this session? What kind of bills would you like to see presented in your state? Any that are going around now that are good or bad ideas?

We delivered this training to a packed room at this year’s Texas Speech Language and Hearing convention. It was a joy to discuss the importance of attachment and regulation in intervention.
Our team hosted a seminar for a group of bilingual speech language pathologists to discuss different CAS interventions as well as considerations for bilingual children. We were happy to have several virtual attendees as well!
